What a terrace is actually for

Most terraces are photographed at midday and used at nine in the evening. Design for the second one.

What a terrace is actually for

A terrace is used, in practice, for about ninety minutes a day, and almost never at the hour it appears in the brochure. The design consequences are specific.

Shade before furniture

A terrace without deep shade is a photograph, not a room. On the Mediterranean projects we now build the soffit before the client has chosen a single chair.

The wind matters more than the view

Cliffside terraces are frequently unusable because of a thermal wind that arrives at the exact hour you would want to eat outside. A 1.1-metre solid parapet fixes it and costs nothing; a glass one looks better in the photograph and fixes nothing at all.
