Cliff House
€12,400,000 For Sale
On Santorini the plot dictates the plan. This one is 14 metres wide and drops away immediately, so the house is arranged as three separate volumes stepping down the rock, joined by a terrace that does most of the living.
Walls are 500 mm of insulated blockwork under hand-applied lime, which is what keeps the interiors at 24 °C through an Aegean August without mechanical cooling.

Architecture
Everything on this island is a question of how much rock you are willing to move. We moved very little: the three volumes sit on the natural benches in the cliff and the terrace bridges between them, which is why the house does not have the sliced-in look of its neighbours. The lime render is applied by hand in four coats over 500 mm of insulated block; the mass is the cooling system, and there is no air conditioning anywhere in the house.
